From wildfires to pandemics, this year has taught us that the world can be an uncertain place. September is National Preparedness Month, so you can focus on preparing for any possible emergency or disaster that your family may face.
Make a Plan
If disaster does strike, cell phone towers and telephone lines may be down. WiFi may not be working properly. It’s important to make a plan with your loved ones in case of emergency.
Determine a meeting place where your family can gather if you aren’t all together when the event occurs. You will also want to map out possible evacuation routes and shelter spots.
Disasters and emergencies can range from an earthquake to a home fire. Review this list by the Department of Homeland Security to ensure you’re prepared for all possible scenarios.
Build a Kit
A basic supply kit is essential to keep on hand. You want to have enough food and water for each person for three days. That is one gallon of water per person per day to be used for drinking and sanitation. Do not forget other essentials, such as batteries, flashlights, a manual can opener, and a cell phone with chargers.
Keep your family in mind when compiling your necessities. Prescription medications, contact lenses, hand sanitizer, pet food—these are all items that you may need to add to your kit to keep everyone healthy and safe. You will also want to consider the local disasters that you might be facing. For example, flooding and wildfires are the most common disasters that threaten Boise. You can find a full list of suggested items here.
Protect Your Home
Check your insurance coverage to see how you are protected against natural disasters. You can also take steps to prepare your home. From caulking around doors and windows, to making sure your gutters are secure, you can make sure that your home is in its best condition to withstand a disaster. A contractor can better assist you with determining what steps to take.
